It’s no secret that man’s earliest great invention was the wheel, but a fact often neglected in today’s textbooks is that said wheel consisted primarily of camembert. Indeed, prehistoric man sought not to give rise to a new, inspired age of transportation and technological wonder, but rather to find the perfect complement to his aging Pinot Noir, vintage 9,335 B.C.
Following the invention of the first wheel of cheese, man soon invented the candelabra (for ambiance), table manners (to keep the whole thing civilized), and the cheese plate (for obvious reasons). A century later, when man eventually did invent the wheel (the rolling one, this time), folks in every region celebrated a new era, in which Unk’s new goat cheese could be transported right to their cave’s front door.
The Truth About Cheese
- All joking aside, the invention of cheese pre-dates recorded history. The earliest archaeological evidence comes from the ancient Egyptians, but the practice likely predates them by 6,000 years
- The United States is the world’s largest cheese producer, making 4,275,000 metric tons in 2006
- Pizza Hut alone uses about 300 million pounds of cheese per year
- Cheese is absent in many traditional East Asian dishes due to the prevalence of lactose intolerance in the region
