May 2012 – Ho’olaule’a Ka Loko A Sola (Celebrate the Lake at sola)

Outside of Chicago, there is a myth about our city that it is painfully landlocked. Sequestered somewhere in the “Crossroads of America,” we poor Midwesterners must be subject to endless tracts of cornfields, tractors, and general boredom. The coasts are the place to be, after all. You can hit the big city and drive down the shore. What could Chicago possibly have?

sola restaurantSo sayeth the poor innocent fools who have yet to experience just how outrageously awesome Lake Michigan truly is. And it’s finally happening. May is the turning point, the corner around which we all anxiously peek with our eyes on the prize – summers at the lake. In many ways, Lake Michigan summarizes a lot of what our city is all about: a free spirit and a tenacious workmanship. We work hard, we play hard, and we revel in every ounce of warmth and sunlight we get.

During the winter months, we at sola try to inject some Hawaiian sunshine to Chicago’s north side, but when summer starts to unfold, we are all Chicago, all the time. Don’t misunderstand – Executive Chef Carol Wallack and Sous Chef Bob Bagley are still serving up Hawaiian- and Asian-inspired dishes, but they’re sourcing the most locally viable produce and meats to make every bite a taste of what makes Chicago great. It’s about defying expectations with the honest truth – experience some Midwestern integrity with a tropical spin and make a reservation today.
